Hi! I am new, and just wanted to bounce something off of everyone here. We have 7 children, and we know we have a collagen defect from past experience but so far it is only at the “it looks like it could be eds” stage. I know that there are eye problems associated, so when my then 2 year old checked out with +700 or higher (farsighted), I just assumed that was part of it. Over the summer she developed hot flashes, which turned into episodes of crazy amounts of uncontrolled peeing, and we found out red dyes affect her in weird ways. So we take out red dye, and she seemed pretty stable(all this while the dr is sending us to specialists to rule out pituitary issues and endocrine problems, which checked out fine). Then incidentally she was exposed to red dye over Christmas, and not only did she have a few days of incontinence, she was scared several times when she peed but couldn’t tell that she had wet herself. This alarmed me because aside from these episodes. she potty trained herself before 2 and is very persnickety about it. So at 31/2, these are not merely accidents. The endocrinologist told us all children backslide, and that since her panels in oct. were fine she must just be un-potty trained. Umm. I don’t pretend to know everything about kids and potties, but I have had several who were late to train or regressed. This isn’t it. When I started looking up collagen and bladder symptoms, I was alarmed to find all kinds of links to MS. I really do not want to go there, but we have ruled out everything it seems. She does not have a tethered cord as far as I have read, nor a congenital neural tube defect. She does not even have a bladder infection, or at least no symptoms! She is going to an allergist to see if she is indeed reacting with her immune system to red dye. I kind of hope she isn’t because that would cut the risk factor for ms….I do not even know what I am asking anymore….I think I just wanted to vent and write this down. Thanks for listening!!
Oh yes, her astigmatism is actually worse than it was 8 months ago, so she is losing near and far vision in her left eye. Not very happy about that….

A B12 deficiency can mimic M.S., so it’s always good to rule that out! Your doctor will want a serum B12 (which may be normal), an MMA, a homocysteine, and a Holo-TC to know for sure. It sounds like she’s had imaging. Any dural ectasia? Any signs of demyelination on the brain MRI? (did she have a brain MRI?) A good allergist/immunologist is a great idea, as is a complete team (I know — that’s a tough one!). Oh, BTW, if in doubt, you can buy strips for urine that will tell you if she is having a UTI or not. Believe it or not, for a while, I was having chronic UTI’s AND vaginal yeast infections, and I was hurting so much, I couldn’t tell what the pain was from! Antibiotics can make a yeast infection worse — I didn’t want to take them “just in case”. The strips helped me figure it out and may be very valuable for use for kids.

Oh! Thank you-I have pee strips I use when I help my midwife friend. That would be nice to rule out. The stand in ped accidentally threw out the pee sample we brought in….I didn’t think much about it because we were just trying to reassure the poor young doctor, lol. The Dr. had an MRI done this last fall to rule out a pituitary tumor. I didn’t know to ask about lesions, and don’t know if they would have looked? I want to assume they did and forget about it, but I have learned better 🙂 We put a diaper on her last night for the first time in a very long time. She peed in her pants, then in the potty, then fell asleep and peed on me, buckets, all in an hour’s time. Frustrated.
