I’ve had palpitations since I was 16. My aunt, mother and father all have either tachycardia or arrhythmia but my GP has always said that I’m fine and I’m too young to have heart problems. She wouldn’t even refer me to a cardiologist so I just gave up for a very long time. Finally, in September 2012, I had palpitations that lasted hours instead of minutes. I was just sitting at my desk, working and had been out of breath for an hour and figured I should go to the hospital. When I got there my heart rate was about 150 and in the 6ish hours I was there, it never got lower than 120. They sent me home with medication (metroprolol) and got my an apointment with a cardiologist. I’ve done so many holter monitor tests, i can’t remember them all. Most recently I’ve done the 2 week one. When i met my cardiologist he said that i had extra heart beats and highlighted them on the sheets of my test. He also switched my prescription to bisoprolol because the metroprolol only seemed to last a couple of hours. The next time i went back, my cardiologist said that i had inappropriate sinus tachycardia, it was somewhat normal in girls my age and usually went away on its own. I asked what we were going to do about the extra heart beats and he said I didn’t have extra heart beats….?? So, he changed his diagnosis. I haven’t been back because the bisoprolol seems to work well enough but some days, if i forget to take it, i’m exhausted, out of breath, I get fluttering which wakes me up at night, i feel like there’s a weight on my chest and my heat rate is about 110 if i forget a pill.
My big issue now is that my husband and I would like to start a family and it’s a huge headache to get an apointment with my cardiologist to see if i can take something else. Otherwise, when i get pregnant and cannot take the bisoprolol i will be very concerned about my health.
I don’t trust my cardiologists’ diagnosis and it will take almost a year to get an apointment with a new one. Could you give me your opinion on this please?
