I recently noticed a brown gold halo color encircling the pupil of both eyes. I have not seen this before and wonder is this normal or anything to do EDS. The picture file is too big
    A bit history:
Last October had lots labs done and my copper levels were high at 192. At the time I was on a copper supplement but when results back discontinued right away. I was evaluated for Kayser Fleicher rings but was found negative even with slit lamp. I was also evaluated by a Retina specialist in my area that is familiar with EDS and he relooked and did not see any Kayser Fleicher rings either in beginning of January 2011. My liver enzymes have all been normal even with last labs done 2 weeks ago. A CT with and without contrast Abdomen Pelvis done in February 2011 was normal except intussception which has been evaluated and is an intermittant one and because of EDS and there is no small intestine being compromised at time.

I will be getting new labs in a couple of weeks with Serum copper and full vitamin panel done at that time. Wilsons Disease was not thought to look into further at the time until labs were done again a few months later to see if there is any change.

When I saw a geneticist a few years ago she was very interested in the “muddy gold” area around my pupil, which looks a little like yours, but is more of a ring rather than a starburst. She just made note of it, didn’t know if it was significant.

She didn’t diagnose me except to say I may have something similar to EDS (rather then my Fibromyalgia diagnosis) and my Erythromelalgia (burning feet hands and ears) may be the inherited type.

I wonder if your copper levels being temporarily high caused the color change and if it’s permanent.

Not too sure. Last time copper was checked in Oct 2010 it was high. I also had been on copper supplements. The copper was discontinued and just yesterday, bunch of new labs drawn and copper serum is being checked again. This will take about 2 weeks to get results of copper in as it is a specialized send out test. If copper levels are high again then they will look at possible Wilsons Disease, but my liver is fine at this time.

I do have an appointment with my opthamologist on July 29. He is familiar with EDS and other collegan disorders and is also a retina specialist. I will let you all know what he thinks too.

Dr. Diana if you have any comments on this or ideas to further explore could you please reply and let me know so we all can learn.
