ParticipantI have a lot of autonomic dysfunction symptoms and head pressure, pain and eye problems. I would like to try Diamox/Acetazolamide. My doctor would not prescribe this drug and I wondered if there was anything similar I could buy to replace it? I feel I need to do something as my symptoms are getting worse.
Thank you in advance.

ParticipantIf you have eye problems, have you been referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist yet? – if not I’d ask your GP for a referral. Ask the neuro-ophthalmologist to look for SUBTLE signs of raised intra-cranial pressure, as they are often not blatant. If they see the signs, they are likely to prescribe Diamox, to reduce the pressure.
While waiting for your appointment, it may be worth going to have some ‘fundus’ photos taken at your local optician (ask them if you can have a copy, before they take them, then they can set you up access online maybe). Vision Express took mine, they charge £10 that’s all. You can then either enlarge them on your computer, or get them enlarged when you get them printed out. You can also check them yourself, before you visit the Neuro-ophthalmologist, if needs be.
It will also be useful to take a description of your head issues and a list of your eye issues (along with notes on when they happen, what you are doing when they happen, any accompanying symptoms at the time they happen, etc) on a sheet to leave with the Neuro-ophthalmologist.

ParticipantHello Barbara,
Many thanks for your very comprehensive reply. I am due to see my optometrist next month, so I shall ask about the ‘fundus’ information and any copies. I am happy to see that there is at least one neuro-ophthalmologist at my local hospital, so I have a better chance of getting referred there if my doctor is willing to do this for me.
I know when my bowel is at its most painful with constipation/gas/food intolerance, then my head, face and eyes seem to to be the most painful. This also applies to my neuropathic pain becoming far worse.
At least this gives me more of a fighting chance to get something being looked at and possibly treated.
Thank you again
Trish

KeymasterHi Trishy, Sadly, no OTC’s are effective at reducing pressure. I WISH we had more options. Sometimes Lasix helps a bit (usually given in conjunction with Diamox), but it is not as effective. We need more options.

ParticipantTrish,
Two things spring to mind that might help in view of your head pressure and constipation, use the search box above and check out posts on:-1). Magnesium
2). B Vitamins and Folic Acid

Many thanks. I already take these supplements. I am going to route that you have suggested.
Kind regards
